About Taiwan
About Taiwan
Taiwan, located on the edge of the Asian continental shelf, is composed of 79 islands, including Green Island, Lanyu, Matsu Island, Penghu Archipelago, and Kinmen. In the east, it borders the Pacific Ocean, 4,000 meters deep and in the west is separated from continental Asia by the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan was shaped mostly by geological process in the Quaternary Pleistocene period. Since that time, faults and wrinkles caused by the Circum-Pacific seismic zone and the up & down movement of the earth's crust. still influence the physiognomy of Taiwan. The most appealing relief of Taiwan is shaped by various interesting landscapes, such as mountains and valleys in the east, plains and basins in the west, as well as volcanoes and river terraces.

Lying on the interface of the European and Asian Plate and the Philippine Sea, Taiwan actually has more than 200 mountains over 3 thousand meters high in a land of only 36 thousand sq. km. Among these mountains, Yushan, 3,950 meters high, is highest peak. Other tall mountains include the Syue, Nanhu, Hsiuku and Peitawushan Mountains. Taiwan is also blessed with beautiful scenery and clear glacial relics, such as cirques.
The mountains of Taiwan
The mountains of Taiwan are mainly divided into the five cordilleras of the Central, Syue, Yushan, Alishan and Coastal Mountains. These mountains plus the Taochumiao and Hengchun Hills cover two thirds of Taiwan. The country's population is concentrated in the three western basins of Taipei, Taichung and Puli, as well as the plains of the east rift valley. The number of the rivers is 129. Only six of them exceed 100 kilometers, including the longest one, Choshui River in the center and the widest one, Kaoping River in the south. This shows a distinguishing feature of Taiwan: high mountains and short rivers—a large area of mountainous regions and hills.

Geography
Northern Taiwan is the region most densely populated. Busy Taipei markets and wonderful natural beauty can always be found side-by-side. The Tatun Volcano Group forms the main body of Yangmingshan National Park, which is located on the western edge of the Taipei Basin. The Cising Mountain area has various volcano landforms and experiences hot geological phenomena. The blooming azalea and alocasia rhizome in February and March every year offers yet another kind of beauty.

Delicious food
Delicious food is an indispensable focus of attention in Taiwan and is often the foremost thought in the minds of Chinese. Taiwan has developed a very varied food cultures because of the mixing of cultures of various peoples in the past.
Local snacks are one of the important foods in the busy urban night markets. These night markets, like Taipei's Shih-Lin, Chiayi's Wenhua Road, Tainan's Hsiaopei, and Kaohsiung's Liuho are food distribution centers. They have become sightseeing areas visited by many foreign travelers. The famous snacks are the most wonderful local ones, like Tanshui's iron egg, floor-chip broth in Keelung Temple, fired salty and dried duck in Yilan, fresh fish in Shihmen Reservoir, rice noodle meatball soup in Hsinchu, Chiayi turkey rice, Tainan coffin burgers, brown sugar ice water in Kaohsiung, and Wanluan pigs' feet in Pingtung.

Fruit Kingdom
Taiwan is called the Fruit Kingdom, as it has an abundance of farm produce and distinctive local products. In your spare time, you might as well taste these famous fresh products, including Shuili confectionery, Taichung sun cakes, Chiayi Fangkuaisu, Hualien millet sesame potato, Taitung millet wine, etc. Formosan local foods are absolutely guaranteed to bring great satisfaction to you and move you deeply when you taste them!

Climate
The climate in Taiwan very comfortable. The annual average temperature is 23.5℃, and the average temperature in each area is over 15℃-16℃, so only in winter can we see the snow in several high mountainous areas. There is a great temperature difference between the morning and night in spring and winter, and the weather changes fast. Because of the effect of the frontal surface, the plum rain season comes with light drizzles in the interval between spring and summer (from March to May). When typhoons attack Taiwan in the summer (from June to August), they bring plentiful rains for the crops. The twenty-one reservoirs from the north to south store water for autumn and winter irrigation.

As Taiwan lies in the monsoon climate region, the southwestern monsoons in the summer and the northeastern monsoons in winter become the primary factors influencing the climate. Bringing a moist hydrosphere, the summer monsoons from the warm southwestern sea causes rainfall on the southwestern and southern plain. However, the winter monsoons from the northeast results in rainfall, high temperatures and wind in the north and northeast. The comparatively rich resources of light, wind and water energy not only provide plants with the necessary conditions for growing, but are also essential for Taiwan's economic development and agricultural production.
